Marjan Đarmati was born in 1971 in Zrenjanin. He finished elementary school in Žitište. He left high school and got a job as a painter in a meat processing factory. In his childhood, he was engaged in drawing, and then he became more and more interested in music. With his band Dve Bajage, he was an active participant in the HC punk scene in the nineties. Later, through that band, he connected with the others of the art scene, today mostly gathered around the Matrijaršija collective. He struggled with alcoholism for many years and was unsuccessfully treated. In 2017, while drunk, he had an accident in which, due to frostbite, the nerves in his fingers were severely and permanently damaged. Shortly after leaving the hospital, he starts drawing again, in a completely new way. The work of Goran Stojčetović left an important influence on him. Stojčetović's ballpoint pen drawing provided Đarmati the technical simplicity he needed. His drawings often and explicitly, but with great calmness, speak of the horrors he wrestled with. He understands his demons well, they are almost friends. That peace gives Đarmati room for virtuosity, but also the wisdom not to insist on that virtuosity. In Fear of Hands, three things have a key symbolic function – fingers, cutting off, and monstrous figures born of chaos. But what most connects his works is intimacy. Neither the scenes of the Vojvodina plains, which come to life in surrealistic transformations, nor the characters from pop culture in the struggle with dreams, nor the stirred-up beasts from other dimensions are ever triggered by aggression. They simply play their role. Marjan accepts it, just as he accepts the viewer, to whom he does not propose anything at all.He found his unique drawing technique in which he rubs the leaves and flowers of field plants on paper and then goes over these plant deposits with filigree strokes with a ballpoint pen, creating original forms and motifs.
He is a member of the Art Brut Serbia Association since 2017. Since 2024, he has been a permanent member of the Art Club of the Center for Depth Art.

Marjan Đarmati è nato nel 1971 a Zrenjanin. Ha frequentato la scuola elementare a Žitište, ma ha abbandonato gli studi superiori per lavorare come verniciatore in una fabbrica di lavorazione della carne. Fin da bambino si è dedicato al disegno, ma in seguito si è appassionato sempre di più alla musica. Negli anni ’90 ha fatto parte attivamente della scena hardcore punk con la sua band Dve Bajage. Proprio grazie a questo gruppo ha iniziato a entrare in contatto con altri artisti, molti dei quali oggi gravitano intorno al collettivo Matrijaršija.
Ha lottato a lungo contro l’alcolismo, senza successo. Nel 2017, in stato di ebbrezza, ha avuto un grave incidente: a causa di un congelamento, ha subito danni permanenti ai nervi delle dita. Poco dopo essere stato dimesso dall’ospedale, ha ripreso a disegnare, ma in un modo del tutto nuovo. È rimasto fortemente influenzato dall’opera di Goran Stojčetović, i cui disegni a penna biro gli hanno suggerito una tecnica semplice, ma potente. I suoi lavori parlano in modo esplicito, ma sereno, degli orrori interiori con cui ha convissuto. I suoi demoni, dice, li conosce bene: sono quasi amici. Questa consapevolezza gli dona una pace che gli permette virtuosismi, ma anche la saggezza di non ostentarli.
Nella serie Fear of Hands, tre elementi ricorrono con forte valore simbolico: le dita, il taglio, e figure mostruose generate dal caos. Ma ciò che più lega le sue opere è l’intimità. Che si tratti di paesaggi della pianura della Voivodina trasfigurati in visioni surreali, di personaggi pop alle prese con i sogni, o di bestie scatenate da altre dimensioni, nulla nasce dall’aggressività. Ogni elemento recita semplicemente la sua parte. Marjan la accetta, così come accetta lo sguardo dello spettatore, a cui non propone nulla.
Ha sviluppato una tecnica unica, strofinando su carta foglie e fiori di piante di campo, per poi lavorare i depositi vegetali con tratti filigranati di penna a sfera, creando forme e motivi originali.
È membro dell’associazione Art Brut Serbia dal 2017 e, dal 2024, membro permanente dell’Art Club del Center for Depth Art.
